What is the tax rate on overtime pay? Suppose someone makes sixteen an hour and works fourty-five hours a week with that extra five being overtime pay (24$/hr) this person lives in Ohio (if that matters much) What would be the tax breakdown for what this person is working? Is overtime taxed at a different rate? Would these numbers bump someone up into a new tax bracket?

You’re taxed on your total ANNUAL income. The taxes withheld from each paycheck are treated as if that check is representative of your total annual income, so they may possibly withhold proportionally more from a 45-hour check than they would from a 40-hour check. Having said that, it all balances out at the end of the year when you submit your tax return based on your total income.

Overtime is taxed at the same rate as other income earned by a person with the same total income. Each week, this person is making 640 dollars of regular pay and 120 dollars of overtime pay, for a total of 760. The person would pay the same tax as any other person who makes 760 dollars each week. For example, the person would pay the same tax as a person who works only fourty hours, but makes nineteen dollars per hour.
